АннотацияThis volume contains a selection from more than 300 papers presented at the Fourth Congress of the International Association of Biomedical Gerontology (IABG), held in Ancona, Italy in 1991. This scientific association was founded in 1985 in New York City with the major aim of bringing scientists from a wide range of disciplines to the study of the aging processes. Aging is a multifactorial process. Mankind has always avoided accepting the diversity of aging patterns as a basic principle, preferring to search for a unified theory of aging. The result of such an approach has been the development of more than 300 theories of aging in this century alone. If the number of theories in a given field is in general inversely proportional to the amount of basic knowledge gathered on the subject, then we have to recognize our still deep ignorance of what aging is.
